THE TRAVELING ARTIST

Updated: Feb 27, 2021

Hi Everyone! To start this blog I thought I would begin telling you a little bit about myself... so here it goes! I'm a Traveling Visual Artist and Illustrator born and raised in Santiago de Chile…. I travel as much as I can so I can portray in my artwork all the amazing things I see around this beautiful world. I started traveling often from a young age because I was very lucky to be born into a multicultural family. I grew up in contact with different nationalities and cultures, doomed to become a travel junkie. When I first graduated College I was pretty lost with what I wanted to say through my art and didn’t really know where to begin. So I decided to go traveling hoping that if I lived new experiences, inspiration was sure to come… Well it was the best decision I ever made! I went first to Guatemala and volunteered teaching art there in two different centres from vulnerable communities: Educarte (Antigua, Guatemala) and Semilla de Esperanza y Amor (San Mateo, Guatemala). Teaching those children was a great place to start… it made me remember why art made me so happy in the first place. By teaching them to notice their surroundings and portray them in a personal way I was starting to see the greatness in the ordinary too. No one made those kids come to class... they came to the centres on their own even though some of them where as young as 5 years old. They wanted education very badly and were the most amazing students!

After that I came back to Chile to work and save up some more money so I could go away again. I ended up going to Australia on a Work and Holiday Visa, one of the best years of my life! I made amazing friends, went to the beach everyday and worked all sorts of jobs… cleaning jobs, bartender jobs, waitressing jobs… I think I was horrible at them but before and after work I was having the time of my life! My friends and I would often have a 22 dollar breakfast when we only had 24 dollars left in our accounts…. the ocean and sunshine were free so who cares!

After some time I was sort of fired by a very racist Australian woman in Sydney who decided that because I spoke Spanish with one of my co-workers (who also happened to be my roommate) we had to be plotting against her (dah) and accused us of stealing from her. After that horrible experience I decided it was time to get back to my artwork. I went to Cairns in Queensland, Australia, and did an Artist Residency there. During my stay I developed the Goomboora Park project, a series of watercolors that intended to show children’s interactions at the park and how by shaping urban parkland we can shape community. It was a wonderful experience and it opened so many doors for me. It was exhibited at the Tanks Arts Centre during the Cairns Children’s Festival in May of 2016 and over 4000 people came to the opening! I was so happy!

Since then I have been working on some projects in Santiago before leaving in a few days to go traveling again indefinitely. I will be blogging about my experiences and the artwork I do while on the road so stay tuned!
